About Damon Carter

 

Damon Carter graduated from the University of Georgia with a BFA degree and began his career as an illustrator and graphic designer in 1961. Among his numerous honors are two finalist certificates from the prestigious International Cleo Awards. However, for several years now, his first love, fine art, including
portraiture, a wide range of studio subject matter, and now plein air painting has become his prime focus.

His clients and collectors include such notables as Mr. Ted Turner, Turner Communications, Atlanta,GA., The Mead Corporation, Dayton, Ohio; Kappa Sigma Fraternity, InternationalMemorial Headquarters, Charlottesville, V A, Downey, Cleveland, Parker, Williams and Davis, Marietta, GA, the Uncle Remus Museum, Eatonton, GA (Joel Chandler Harris permanent collections), Standard Office Systems, Atlanta, GA and a host of private clients and collectors.

Artists he has studied with include Nelson Shanks, David Leffel, Burton Silverman, Richard Whitney, John Howard Sanden, Charles Reid, Jim Schell, Marc Chatov, and Richard MacDonald.

Fellow artists have recognized the quality of his work, both locally and nationally. In 1989, he was honored as a finalist in the Artist Magazines National Portrait Contest from a field of over 10,000 entries. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Portrait Society of Atlanta and served as president ftom 1993 to 1995. He is also a member of the Plein Air Painters of Georgia, and loves painting on site.

His work can be seen at the Avery Gallery in Marietta GA, O'Karma-Jones in Atlanta, GA, and his studio (by appointment) in Woodstock, GA. Damon believes a true artist never stops learning and he constantly studies the Masters in art museums, galleries, and his growing studio library.
